Created in 1945, INED has been a public scientific and technological establishment (EPST) since 1986. It is under the joint control of the Ministry for Research and the Ministry for Employment and Solidarity.
**Missions
At its own initiative or on request of the government, INED studies the population in all its aspects, in France and overseas, through three missions:
- undertake and encourage all research work on populations to contribute to the evolution and development of demographic science
- collect and provide French and international information (publication, documentation), accessible on site or via the Internet
- distribute this information and participate in training in its field of competence
