Created in 1945, INED has been a public scientific and technological establishment (EPST) since 1986. It is under the joint control of the Ministry for Research and the Ministry for Employment and Solidarity.

**Missions

At its own initiative or on request of the government, INED studies the population in all its aspects, in France and overseas, through three missions:

  • undertake and encourage all research work on populations to contribute to the evolution and development of demographic science
  • collect and provide French and international information (publication, documentation), accessible on site or via the Internet
  • distribute this information and participate in training in its field of competence

  • natality, fecundity, contraception, abortion and international monitoring
  • family, households, marriage, divorce, sexual behavior
  • mortality, morbidity, health
  • internal migration and spatial distribution of the population
  • international migrations and foreign population
  • excluded populations (homeless, prisons, difficult questions)
  • economy and demography
  • evolution of developing countries
  • populations genetic
  • history of populations

  • a budget of 12.5 million euros (2001).
  • 170 employees, including 57 researchers.
