First sequencing of the genome of a plant-parasitic animal

The first genome of a parasite of plants has been sequenced by an international consortium of 27 laboratories, including INRA, CNRS, and Génoscope, and coordinated by a team of researchers from the INRA center in Sophia-Antipolis. The work pertains to the genome of the parasitic worm Meloidogyne incognita. This advancement allows insight into the arsenal of adaptations developed by these attackers of cultivated plants. This study also has lead to the identification of new targets in fighting these organisms. The details of their work are published in the online version of the July 27, 2008, edition of Nature Biotechnology.
