Underestimated memory impairment in alcoholic patients

Drink to forget? With the risk of the onset of significant memory impairment… While it had been thought that only those alcoholic patients diagnosed with « Korsakoff’s Syndrome » suffered imprtant gaps in memory, a team at the « Cognitive Neuropsychology and Functional Neuroanatomy of Human Memory » laboratory (Inserm Unit U923) in Caen has just shown that other alcoholic patients also present disorders of varying seriousness involving the various components of memory. In light of the fact that there are two million alcohol-dependent persons in France, the researchers feel that it is indispensable to implement systematic neuropsychological evaluation of alcoholic patients. Their work will be published in the July issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
