At the invitation of Professors Anne E. McCants (MIT) and Andrew Gordon (Harvard University), the American partners of IRN CNRS RISCDIS (Recovery trajectories of Societies to natural DISasters), Emmanuel Garnier was hosted in Cambridge (Massachusetts) between September 25 and October 7, 2022. The work program was particularly heavy, notably in the form of courses, seminars and working meetings at MIT and Harvard University devoted to ongoing research and involving local students. They made it possible to take stock of the progress of these studies, in particular that of private Parisian diaries such as the Journal du libraire Hardy that Prof. Anne McCants had consulted with Emmanuel Garnier last June at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.

Research has also taken place at the Peabody Essex Museum, located in Salem, in order to study the exceptional collection of archives of the East India Marine Society (https://www.pem.org/explore-art/ maritime-art-and-history).

Since the organization was founded in 1799, its members have donated logbooks, navigational instruments and nautical charts for other sailors to consult to increase safety at sea. From the perspective of the IRN RISCDIS, they contain completely new climate data on the scale of the North American continent, which can be supplemented by their French counterparts in order to reconstruct long climate series.
