Presentation
The French-American Doctoral Exchange (FADEx) program encourages scientific exchanges between American and French Ph.D. students working in the same scientific field through a week-long program organized in France. By doing so, it supports the creation of future French-American scientific collaborations.
Each FADEx edition focuses on a different scientific topic. The 2018 edition will be organized on artificial intelligence, the ability for a machine to make complex reasoning comparable to human reasoning. This vast and complex field encompasses issues as diverse as image recognition, robot motion planning, car driving or language translation.
Topics of interest
We will focus on the following topics:
- Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
- Machine Learning (Statistical Learning, Deep Learning)
- Problem Solving, Planning and Search
- Autonomous Multi-Agents and Robotics
- Natural Language Processing
- Vision and Image Understanding
- Information Retrieval
This high-level program on artificial intelligence is open to Ph.D. students affiliated with a French or American university. Selected Ph.D. students will get the chance to:
- Participate in a selective program along with other outstanding and passionate Ph.D. students
- Build scientific and personal relationships with young researchers
- Benefit from high-level presentations and keynotes in the field of artificial intelligence
Three seminars in a week
The 2018 FADEx edition on Artificial Intelligence will take place in France from June 24 to 29, 2018. Participants will visit different labs and research institutes recognized for their expertise on artificial intelligence in three different cities:
- At Université Côte d’Azur in Nice Sophia Antipolis
- At Université Grenoble Alpes in Grenoble
- At the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria) in Paris
Selected candidates will have the opportunity to visit the labs and meet with their teams, to attend keynote talks by senior researchers, to present their own research and to explore potential avenues for collaboration.
Funding
The FADEx grant covers the round trip ticket to France, travel between the three cities, accomodations and most meals for American laureates. It covers travel between the three cities, accomodations and most meals for French laureates.
How to apply
[*The call for applications is now closed.*]
To apply:
- Fill in the online application form
- Send a cover letter and the completed advisor authorization form by email to [email protected]
The jury gathers experts from the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States and from the partnering research institutes. The jury will base its decision on the scientific excellence of the candidates, their motivation and the maturity of their project. Please note that a good cover letter should present your background and should help the jury assess your motivation to join the program.
Ten laureates enrolled in an American university and ten laureates enrolled in a French university will be selected. U.S. citizenship is not required for American applicants.
Once selected, laureates will have to provide additional information such as, but not limited to:
- Completed travel form
- Copy of passport
- Copy of U.S. visa (if applicable)
- Copy of student ID
- High-resolution photo
- Abstract of presentation
Key dates:
- Call for applications opened on January 16, 2018.
- Call for applications will close on March 2, 2018.
- Results will be announced on April 6, 2018.
