SUMMARY:De Paris à New York : L'ingénierie visionnaire de Gustave Eiffel
DESCRIPTION:Les prouesses architecturales mondialement connues que sont la tour Eiffel et la Statue de la Liberté ont pu voir le jour (et être suffisamment durables pour pouvoir être encore admirées aujourd’hui) grâce aux innovations radicales d’un ingénieur français exceptionnel : Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923). \nDans le cadre du centenaire de sa disparition\, le service scientifique de l’Ambassade de France invite Jean François Belhoste\, historien et ancien élève de l’École Centrale des Arts et des Manufactures (dont Eiffel reste sans doute à ce jour le diplômé le plus célèbre dans le monde) à donner une conférence sur les innovations mises en oeuvre dans la conception de la Statue de la Liberté\, et plus généralement sur les liens entre Gustave Eiffel et les Etats-Unis. \nGustave Eiffel est né à Dijon en 1832. Diplômé de l’Ecole Centrale en 1855\, il débuta sa carrière comme ingénieur civil\, avant de diriger une usine de construction mécanique et métallique. Après avoir créé sa propre entreprise en 1866\, il se lança dans la construction de ponts et viaducs qui assurèrent sa renommée tel celui de garabit édifié entre 1880 et 1884. C’est en 1880 qu’il fut sollicité pour concevoir\, puis construire le pylône destiné à soutenir les tôles de cuivre de la future statue de la Liberté. Il y travailla avec ses équipes jusqu’en 1882-1883\, peu avant qu’en 1885\, il n’entreprît les premières études de la future Tour Eiffel. \nC’est en novembre 1875 que fut définitivement décidée par l’Union franco-américaine la réalisation d’une grande Statue de la Liberté éclairant le monde\, confiée au sculpteur Auguste Bartholdi. Le bras et la torche purent être montrés dès 1876 à l’exposition de Philadelphie puis la tête à la conception de laquelle avait travaillé l’architecte Viollet-le-Duc\, à l’exposition universelle tenue à Paris en 1878. Ce n’est qu’en juin 1880 que les travaux reprirent avec la confection de la robe\, faite de plaques de cuivre fixées à un pylône de fer\, calculé pour résister aux forts vents de la baie de New York.
